COZENS, ALEXANDER (d. ), landscape-painter in water-colours, was a natural son of Peter the Great and an Englishwoman from Deptford. The czar took her to Russia, where Cozens was born (date unknown), and had another son by her, who became a general in the Russian army. Alexander Cozens(–) was a British landscape painterin watercolours, born in Russia. He taught drawing and wrote treatises on the subject, evolving a method in which imaginative drawings of landscapes could be worked up from abstract blots on paper. His .
The most informative sources on genealogical data for Richard Cozens have been through the earlier mention of him in Oppe's book on Alexander and John Robert Cozens, his son and grandson, (Note 4, the landscape painters; and more recently the information contained in Kim Sloan's excellent notes in her item, also on the art of Alexander and John. Cozens, Alexander kŭz´ənz , c–, English draftsman and writer, Cozens is thought to have been the first principal English master to work entirely with landscape subjects. He invented a system of blot drawings using accidental blots on drawing paper to aid his imagination by suggesting a landscape that could be further developed.
